Septic Tank Dos and Don'ts for Littlehampton Households
2 min readLittlehamptonBy AA Drainage
How you use water at home has a big effect on your septic tank. A few simple habits keep it working and extend its life.
Do
Good habits include:
- Have the tank emptied at least once a year
- Spread washing machine loads through the week
- Fix dripping taps and running toilets
- Know where your tank and drainage field are
Don't
Avoid:
- Flushing wipes, nappies or sanitary products
- Pouring fat, oil or grease down sinks
- Using large amounts of bleach or strong chemicals
- Parking or building over the drainage field
- Running rainwater into the septic tank
Why rainwater matters
Roof water entering a septic tank flushes solids out into the drainage field. If your downpipes connect to the tank, we can redirect them to a separate soakaway.
Frequently asked questions
Is it OK to use a garbage disposal unit?
It adds a lot of solids, so it is best avoided with a septic tank.
Can I plant trees near the drainage field?
Avoid trees and large shrubs, as roots can block pipes.
