Autumn Drainage Checklist for Midhurst Properties
2 min readMidhurstBy AA Drainage
Leaves and heavy rain arrive together in the South Downs. A little preparation in autumn can stop flooding and blockages over winter.
Your checklist
Before the wettest months:
- Clear leaves from gutters, gullies and channel drains
- Lift inspection chamber covers and check water flows freely
- Check soakaways are not overflowing after rain
- Book septic tank emptying if due
- Check ditches and outfalls are not blocked
Watch for warning signs
Water pooling where it never used to, slow drains and damp patches on walls are early warnings. Dealing with them now is cheaper than emergency repairs mid-winter.
When to call a professional
If you find standing water in chambers, broken covers or a soakaway that never empties, we can survey and repair the system before the worst weather.
Frequently asked questions
How do I know if a soakaway has failed?
If it stays full for days after rain, it is likely blocked or too small.
Should ditches be cleared?
Landowners with ditches have a responsibility to keep water flowing.
